“The best
things in life are free.” - American Proverb
“For it is
in giving that we receive...” - St. Francis of Assisi
If we could give everyone we meet a gift
of enduring value, how different would our life look in a year? If we could give everyone we meet a gift of
enduring value every time we meet them how
different would our life look in just a few months? And what exactly is a gift of enduring value
anyway?
When we look back at the people who have meant
the most to us, what was it that they gave us? Wasn't our favorite teacher in school the one who captured our interest
and showed us that we could accomplish worthwhile things? Weren't those that made us feel we belonged
and had something of value to contribute the ones whose friendship we valued
most? How about those that loved us
unconditionally – those that let us know that they would continue to care for
us regardless of what we did or didn’t do?
And how about those that reached out a welcoming hand when we walked
into a new place feeling nervous and unsure in a strange environment? The random strangers that just happened to be
there when we needed help the most? Those
that forgave us when we erred rather than trying to profit personally by
gossiping about our shortcomings? The people
whose steady demeanor gave us a reference point in life that we could always
count on?
Yes, these things and many others are of
lasting value. But others are more
difficult. How about just a quiet prayer
that the person who is struggling with arrogance or pride find some peace? How about a card, phone call or email to let
someone know we are thinking of them and they are important to us?
Today we can do something different – in fact
today we can be something different.
Today, one interaction at a time we can decide we are going to give
something of value to everyone we meet.
And the great thing about spiritual giving? When we give all we have we simply have more
than ever available to give. Let’s try
it as an experiment, and tonight look back and see how much value we found in our day. We just might find that we begin to change
our world – one interaction at a time.
Today, may I
tune in.
Have a great
Monday all!!
David
