Think you are free? Meditation for 7/4/14

“Freedom isn’t free.”  -  Walter Hitchcock

“The best things in life are free.”  - American Proverb

In this country we speak often of freedom.  Many things outside ourselves can try to oppress us.  There are multiple layers of government that have the power to take away our possessions and our physical freedom.  The work place environment that we choose to be engaged in can foster stress and chaos, even up to the point of those who become tyrants when they feel they have a bit of power.  There is the domestic situation that we choose to live in – it seems those closest to us can restrict us as much or more than the others combined if they are of the dramatic nature.  Then there are all manner of things to become addicted and enslaved to – debt, prescription and non-prescription drugs (alcohol is a drug,) television, political movements, religion, sex, material possession – the list seems endless.  Some of these things we have more of a say in than others – for instance we never have a choice in our blood family but we do have a choice about addictions we avoid or subject ourselves to.

But there is a whole other type of freedom that we have all the say about.  It is the freedom from the bondage of our selves.  It is the freedom from the fear of asserting ourselves and the freedom from the fear of change.  It is the freedom to stick up for ourselves and express our opinions and the freedom to know that if we have to completely change our location and circle of acquaintances that we will be just fine.  It is freedom from guilt and shame and the freedom to look the world in the eye.  It is the freedom from the fear of financial insecurity and the freedom from self doubt and procrastination.  It is the freedom to walk away from things we know we should not involve ourselves in without the fear of scorn from others.   It is the freedom from unhealthy relationships that comes when we learn to be transparent.  This list also could go on almost endlessly.  But herein lies one of the secrets of life.

Developing faith in that spirit that would speak to us through our intuition gives us the power to overcome the bondage of ourselves.  And if we overcome the bondage of ourselves, there is no temporal power that can do anything to us that we cannot overcome.  Even the fears of isolation, abandonment and death itself lose their grasp on us.  The secret is that freedom is an inside job.  There will always be things outside ourselves that would oppress us, but if we do the work to connect spiritually we cease fighting any of them and lift ourselves above the battle field.  True freedom is not free, but we pay the price in surrender and willingness, not in dollars and cents.

Today, may I connect.

Happy 4th of July all !!
David
